Road Course Career Best for Elliott

Chase Elliott scored the best road course finish of his Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series career Sunday at Sonoma Raceway. Elliott came home with a fourth-place performance in the Toyota/Save Mart 350 and had his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet near the front of the field most of the afternoon. “Yeah, I felt like we made the most of our afternoon at least and the race that we were trying to run,” Elliott said after the race. “We realized there at the beginning that I don’t think we had the pace that the No. 4 (Kevin Harvick) and the No. 78 (Martin Truex, Jr.) had, so we elected to try to get stage points in each stage and obviously when you do that, that sets you back for the final one. “Fortunately, I had a good enough car to drive forward and get back in the top five. Solid afternoon for us and looking forward to the next road race, that was a lot of fun.” Elliott continues to pursue his first career Cup victory but he has turned in several impressive performances this season like ..

Harvick Settles for Second

Kevin Harvick settled for second after being outfoxed by Sonoma Raceway winner Martin Truex Jr. in Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350. Truex Jr. faked a trip down pit road on lap 73, a move that sent both Harvick and teammate Clint Bowyer to their pits. That allowed Truex Jr. to have an extra seven laps on new tires when he eventually came in for service. Although disappointed with his eventual second place finish because of the circumstances, Harvick accepted the fact his team may have come up short in the strategy game but that it didn’t completely impact the outcome. “It didn’t affect our day at all,” Harvick said. “I don’t think it would have been any different of an outcome.” Harvick tipped his cap to the strength of the Furniture Row Racing team and the car Truex Jr. piloted to Victory Lane. “Martin just had a little bit faster car than we did today,” Harvick explained. “At the beginning of the race, we could outrun him just a little bit, and as the second stage got over, we just..

Truex Jr. Wins at Sonoma

Race Results | Photos | Standings Martin Truex Jr. scored his third win of the season, and second at Sonoma Raceway, in Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350. Truex led 62 of the 110 laps and was ahead of Kevin Harvick by 10.5 seconds at the checkered flag. A strategy to stay out rather than pit and fake out those behind him into coming to pit road proved to be the maneuver that helped propel Truex Jr. to Victory Lane by a convincing margin. “That’s all (crew chief) Cole (Pearn). That’s all him,” Truex Jr. said. “I was just begging, hoping the caution wouldn’t come out.” Sonoma Race Winners | All-Time Race Winners Harvick, Clint Bowyer, Chase Elliott and Kyle Busch rounded out the top five. “Oh man we all make mistakes,” Harvick said about his team being faked out. “We all do things split second that might be right after it all happens.” (Read More) Kurt Busch, Erik Jones, Aric Almirola, Alex Bowman and Denny Hamlin completed the first 10 finishers.
